About Day of Caring 2021
Welcome to our second Swarthmore Day of Caring! Between June 8–10, from noon to noon ET, the Swarthmore community will come together to demonstrate our support and compassion for one another. We invite you to make a gift in honor of someone at Swarthmore who made a difference in your life.
By making a Day of Caring gift, you’re joining hundreds of other alumni, parents, students, and friends in celebration of our collective resilience during a year unlike any other.
Plus, your gift will help release $350,000 in challenge funds thanks to a generous Class of 1979 alum.
To increase your impact on current and future Swarthmore students, join the Sustainers’ Circle. If you set up a monthly git of $5 or more, you'll receive a Swarthmore silicone tumbler — perfect for your year-round outdoor gatherings.
When we launched the first Day of Caring last summer, our world faced a historic convergence of crises. It felt critical in that moment to draw on our extended community’s compassion and rise to the challenges ahead. A year later, those challenges are still with us and we have yet to find our new normal. But Swarthmore students continue their pursuit of truth, knowledge, transformation, and social justice. While countless uncertainties remain ahead of us, you can be certain that a Swarthmore education remains accessible, inclusive, and extraordinary regardless of what comes next.
The $350,000 Day of Caring Challenge will support the following two initiatives:
- Swarthmore Summer Scholars (S³P) Endowment This fund ensures that S³P will continue to support 16 students each year who are first-generation, low-income, and/or underrepresented in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Summer Scholars learn to be academically successful in challenging, college-level classes while building relationships with professors and classmates before the full pressure of the academic year.
- Dining and Community Commons Inclusive social and community spaces are foundational to the College's residential-based educational experience. Through this project, the College community has the exciting opportunity to reimagine the social and dining experiences that are central to Swarthmore’s ability to fulfill its mission of educating the whole person.

On behalf of our entire community, thank you for your incredible show of support during the 2021 Day of Caring. In total, 1,122 alums, families, faculty, staff, and friends came together to raise over $880,000 to support current and future Swarthmore students — and did it all in honor of members of our community who made a difference in their lives. Visit bit.ly/dayofcaringhonorees to read notes about the honorees.

Will you be the one who brings us past 1,000 and unlocks the final $100,000 in challenge funds? We're almost there!

As we enter the final hours of our Day of Caring challenge, join Shayena and hundreds of others with a Day of Caring gift.

656 days ago by Nick ForrestI honor the College's front-line workers during this Day of Caring, and I thank them for their service. I honor Janet Smith Dickerson H'92, former Dean of Students, who was a mentor and guide during my formative years. And I honor Bob Barr '56, former Dean of Admissions, for his support, guidance, and mentorship during my time here as a student; he had confidence in me before I had confidence in myself, and I am thinking of him on this Day of Caring.
